The first discussion to form up a Samoan Community at our Massey Parish was on Sunday 19th August 1982 after the 11.00am Mass. Those attended included Mumu and Falatila Valeni, Tuala & Folole Tualasea, Merita Pua, Ake Hunt and Toefliga VonDinklage. The discursion went well and ended up with a decision that we had to let all the Samoans in our Parish and our Samoan Chaplain at the time Father Nili to attend our next meeting of the 9th September 1982 at 4:00 pm in our Church Hall at Ranui.
Several people attended the meeting on 9th September 1982 including some from the Henderson Samoan Community who were there to support our new Samoan Community for our massey Parish. During the meeting Father Nili suggested that we select Officers to start up the community and they were:-
President: Mu Valeni
Vice President: Tupuola Sula
Secretary: Toefiliga VonDinklage
Treasurer: Savea Fa’aletatau
The following Sunday 16th September 1982, was the official meeting and our Samoan Community started with eleven (11) families. We joined the Catholic Samoan Community in Auckland on their first Sunday of October meeting under the leadership of President Tuilaepa Leavai. We have continued to serve our Parish and the Auckland Catholic Samoan Community from then on until now.
Our Massey Catholic Samoan Community now has 28 families working together and the total number of people including children is 147, one hundred and forty seven. We work hand in hand with our parish and we are involved in many committees such as the Finance, Readings, Maintenance, Communions, PPC etc.
Our Sunday School works very well under the leadership of Mr Sio Fuava and our Choir is very busy under the leadership of Mr Aualiitia Lua. Our Choir Master and instructor are Mr. Vai and Mrs Trish Tofialu. We sing in our Parish Mass every third Sunday of the month and the forth Sunday of the month is our Samoan Mass. If there are special masses or event he Easter or Christmas Masses, the Parish will always ask us to lead and sing in these Masses.
This is our short story about our Massey Catholic Samoan Community and its work in our Parish.
Thank you.
